São Paulo’s eastern edge produced a full-back whose stamina turned width into a permanent attacking resource.

Cafu survived repeated early rejections, broke through at São Paulo, and won South American and world club honours before major chapters with Roma and Milan.

He appeared in the 1994, 1998, and 2002 World Cup finals—the only man to do so—and captained Brazil to the 2002 title.
