Origin
and identity
Bridgetown gave cricket a natural athlete who refused to fit into a single role.
Sobers entered Test cricket at seventeen as a spin bowler, then revealed batting of rare range and authority. His unbeaten 365 against Pakistan in 1958 stood as Test cricket's record score for thirty-six years.
He captained West Indies, bowled in several distinct styles, and turned fielding into another avenue for influence. The breadth of his gifts made 'all-rounder' feel less like a category than a description invented for him.
