Marshall lacked the towering frame expected of a West Indian quick; the ball never noticed.

A skiddy run-up and late acceleration produced pace, lift and movement from an unusually compact frame. He could swing the new ball, cut the old one and read batters quickly enough to change plans inside an over.

At Headingley in 1984, a broken thumb could not keep him from bowling England out. His 376 Test wickets came at 20.94, the number that best captures how rarely opponents escaped.
