Hadlee turned the fast bowler's run-up into a study in removing everything unnecessary.

He shortened and refined his approach until rhythm, seam position and relentless accuracy did the work. Across the 1980s, New Zealand could enter any Test believing Hadlee might tilt the match alone.

His batting added genuine all-round value, while county seasons with Nottinghamshire deepened his control. Four hundred wickets arrived first; 431 remained the final total.
