and identity

Travagliato gave Milan a defender whose authority came from timing more than size.

Baresi made his Milan debut in 1978, stayed through difficult Serie B seasons, and grew into captain and organiser of one of football’s greatest defences.

As a libero he anticipated danger, carried the ball cleanly, and directed the offside line. His intelligence set the tempo from the back.
