and identity

Utrecht produced a striker whose balance and imagination made difficult finishes appear inevitable.

Van Basten emerged at Ajax as a prolific, technically complete forward before joining AC Milan and helping define one of Europe’s strongest club sides.

His EURO 1988 volley became the lasting image, but the deeper catalogue included aerial timing, two-footed finishing, and movement that made space before defenders recognised it.
