Sydney Barnes developed a hybrid craft that opponents struggled even to describe, let alone solve.
Barnes bowled briskly with seam, cut and leg-break movement, exploiting changes of pace and angle long before modern analysis named them. He preferred league cricket yet dominated Tests.
His 189 Test wickets cost only 16.43 each. In South Africa in 1913–14 he took 49 wickets in four Tests, a series record that still stands.
