Origin
and identity

Alex Ovechkin made his name synonymous with goal scoring and a historic chase beyond 894.

Ovechkin's shooting gave Washington an instantly recognizable attacking identity. His long pursuit of Wayne Gretzky's regular-season goal total became a story that stretched across seasons and generations of hockey supporters.

On 6 April 2025, a power-play goal against the Islanders took him to 895 and past Gretzky. That landmark joined his 2018 Stanley Cup, repeated goal-scoring awards and world championship successes in a career built around finishing.
