Origin
and identity
Maureen Connolly achieved the first women's calendar-year singles Grand Slam in a career of astonishing brilliance and heartbreaking brevity.
Coached from childhood in San Diego, Connolly built a powerful baseline game around timing and clean ball-striking. She won the 1951 US singles championship before turning seventeen, then added Wimbledon the following season.
In 1953 she swept the Australian, French, Wimbledon and US singles championships, completing the calendar Grand Slam at eighteen. Further titles followed in 1954, but a serious horse-riding accident ended her competitive career. Her nine major singles titles therefore belong to a compressed period that remains one of tennis's most remarkable achievements.
